Gen. Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and once a close ally of President Xi Jinping, is under investigation for allegedly leaking technical data on China’s nuclear weapons to the US. The Wall Street Journal reported that the claims emerged during a closed-door briefing for senior officers, shortly before Beijing’s public announcement. Zhang, 75, is also accused of accepting bribes and abusing his authority in military decision-making.
