[读书笔记] 丁尼生 《尤利西斯》 节选

本杰明格雷厄姆八十岁生日爬梯上对儿孙们做了个演讲,演讲最后以这一段诗作结尾。这首诗是写老年的,不过我看了后觉得很受激励,就抄录下来以作自勉:# f* ~0 n1 H2 [. q4 Z8 h% @

7 c. t% n' k8 d1 T4 Y2 A'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.* F- N! ^* w+ F
/ F4 ?3 E! O5 X( b) ~+ ~2 D! d: i
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
+ Y3 ^( n% u1 |0 m  j
" z; k2 n/ X8 p' A3 e. p  FThe sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
8 s8 j" ?3 K2 O; [5 F1 p5 O5 O
! {# K& b# s- a& ]3 MTo sail beyond the sunset, and the baths7 U% f& I4 O% K4 w6 ~* g

7 u" H3 t7 C5 v( V6 M! R0 A6 KOf all the western stars,until I die.
; a' E) S& n$ @9 u7 z) T 1 Y$ a+ {* X! n" q
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;
  f4 J. T0 r9 R2 Z% N+ c/ ]3 N ; L7 f9 p$ [9 O# X' N. J6 }; v
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,' `4 U3 j# R$ ]5 I7 D; M  k% I

And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.

Though much is taken, much abides; and though

We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are

One equal temper of heroic hearts,
