Eric Stone: How much does the government control prices in China?

    Nuri Vittachi:
I understand how someone immediately jumping to talking about Chinese government’s controls can be irritating, but I also understand that Eric Stone was asking a genuine question and deserves a straight answer.
Basically, China operates as a mixed economy, just like most other countries, with prices set by the markets, except for a limited list, just like most other countries.
The Chinese govt has campaigned against hoarding and profiteering for many years. I think in general businesses in China (and Singapore and Hong Kong and Japan) may be more likely to co-operate with their Asian-style governments than would be the case in some western nations, but there’s not a huge difference. For example, last year the Chinese government wanted the coal industry and the steel industry to keep prices stable. The govt issued general remarks about the long term benefits of keeping prices down – in other words, they encouraged them to avoid raising prices but did not force them.

Eric Stone: How much does the government control prices in China?

    Nuri Vittachi:

how much interest rates raise / printed money dumped into the (world) economy have the US fed been controlling the prices of everything everywhere around the world since it's "establishment" (2008) for its own benefits at everyone else expense? Now they pretend there is an inflation problem to tackle?

This is a better graph to look at to have a grasp of how they control prices.
